“Why the Goldberg Variations?” The easy answer to its enormous popularity is that it is a masterwork, and it is surely that, but why has a work that for so long lived in the shadows become a touchstone for pianists and a work beloved by listeners. Like so much of Bach, the reputation of the piece for many was still as a staggering intellectual accomplishment, and it certainly is, but also like much of Bach, it is enormously entertaining and therein lies the key to why it has become so beloved.
